Anarcho-Tyranny

So I learned a new word recently.

I've heard it described before, but finally I saw it summed up into this single word (phrase?) of anarcho-tyranny. Apparently this was some guy's idea from decades ago now. But it seems relevant today and so that's probably why I've heard it.

For those who don't know, the TLDR (Too Long, Didn't Read, that's also a relatively new addition to my vocabulary, but I digress) is this: Anarchy + Tyranny = Anarcho-Tyranny. It's anarchy around you and tyranny above you. Simultaneously no rules for those around you but draconian laws for you.

It's when a man with 14 previous arrests, resulting in convictions for armed robbery, felony larceny and breaking and entering, is allowed to remain on your streets, only to re-offend, this time taking the life of an innocent refugee woman. (Article here)

It's when only 42% of all... I'll call them "serious" crimes are solved in America's largest city. One can only imagine how many "lesser" crimes like theft, harassment, and property damage go unresolved. (Stats here)

Yet at the same time, the government finds the resources and will to deport people for having a role in protests they don't approve. (Article here)

Or when they deem that standing silently, praying too close to an abortion centre is an arrestible offence. Not shouting. Not holding signs. Not accosting passers-by. Simply thinking to yourself while standing in the wrong spot on a public sidewalk. (Article here)

It's a strange phenomenon. And a dystopian one at best. Perhaps you've noticed it too. And the first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one. And you can't admit you have a problem, until you can name it.

Yours Truly,
